Course Description: This course will explore contemporary ethical issues confronting the practices of medicine and biomedical science. We will examine relevant case studies about euthanasia/assisted suicide, abortion, stem cells and IVF, CRISPR-Cas9 technology and HIV/AIDS trials. Through the course you will become familiar with foundational concepts in healthcare ethics, and consider and debate how these concepts apply to biomedical issues. In addition you will develop your ability to critically evaluate arguments and to write clearly about your own position on complex biomedical ethical issues.

Course Description: This course focuses on a comparative approach to the modern phenomenon of genocide. It is based on the proposition that genocide can be studied from a comparative, critical and theoretical perspective, while simultaneously preserving the specificity and distinctive nature of each genocidal moment. Several genocides of the 20th and 21st centuries will be analyzed through media, technology, and visual culture. Additionally, this course will examine atrocity remembrance and commemoration for each genocidal case, including the Armenian Genocide, the Holocaust, the Rwandan Genocide and the Ethnic Cleansing of the Balkans.

Prerequisite: Upper division standing.
