RST 001B Death & Afterlife
Instructor: Lauren Eastland

Lecture—3 hour(s); Discussion—1 hour(s). Introduction to comparative religion, focusing on the theme of death and the afterlife in different religious traditions. Not open to students who have taken RST 003B. GE credit: AH, OL, VL, WC, WE.

What happens after we die? From animists to monotheists, Native Americans to Muslims, religious traditions have wide-ranging ideas about death and the afterlife. In this course, we will use beliefs about the soul, death, and the afterlife to explore a variety of topics including heaven and hell, altered states of consciousness, spirit mediums, mummies, zombies, and sacrifice. Ultimately, we cannot answer the question, but we will have some intriguing conversations as we explore how people have tried.
