Muslim Religious Elite and Imperial Rule in Sixteenth-Century North India
The sixteenth century saw the rise of the Mughal Empire and other abortive states in present-day Afghanistan, Pakistan, and north India. This presentation studies the various ways in which Muslim religious elites tied their fortunes to the new political ventures. New opportunities arose for more marginal figures whether already in north India or as immigrant from Central Asia to mystify and sanctify imperial rule, to provide diplomatic support, and essentially to tie their family history to the ruling dynasty.
