This project dives into issues of the body and personhood when a person has an intimate experience with divinity. Looking specifically at Mechthild of Magdeburg’s writings and the “hidden chamber” scene that she describes, personhood and the body are understood relationally rather than individually fixed. Through the different stages of encounter Mechthild experiences with God, the core of personhood is able to be understood by both what is lost and what is gained. By using multiple modern theorists, Mechthild’s understanding of her own and God’s personhood is more clearly defined and established.
