Mythological narratives have been noted to play a foundational role in the construction of larger, communal identity, myths functioning as malleable, anachronistic forces to serve the needs of the people who need them most. My senior thesis aims to track these transformations on a processual level, specifically in looking at the political instrumentalization of myth, charting how political actors re-accentuate these narratives in their form, circulation, and desired affect. I will be using the Ramayana and the Eddic Saga as case studies. These specific narratives co-opted within the nationalist political movements that led to the demolition of the Babri Masjid Mosque and the emergence of the pre-Nazi social groups of post World War I Germany. In this undertaking, I hope to highlight the potency of mythological narrative as a dynamic actor within our world, through this examination of the transformation of myth into a locus for political violence.
