Prof. Mairaj Syed Awarded Fulbright to Egypt
We congratulate Prof. Mairaj Syed, who has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to Egypt. Prof. Syed's project focuses on his computational hadith studies monograph, which introduces computational and large-scale data methods for studying the development of hadith literature during the first three centuries of Islam. His time in Egypt will allow him to deepen his understanding of how traditional Muslim religious scholars have conceptualized the early history of hadith, while also engaging the perspectives of Western-trained Islamicists working in a modern Arab intellectual context. A central aim of the monograph is to situate computational approaches to hadith historiography alongside the major interpretive traditions that have shaped the field, especially Western Islamicist scholarship and modern Islamic scholarship.
